The Federal Ministry of Education Headquarters Library is charged with the provision of information for education, research, planning and recreation for effective and efficient service delivery. Indeed, the library provides access to all kinds of materials which contain credible and substantial information required for good governance, national growth and development especially on education matters.
B.FUNCTIONS OF GOVERNMENT LIBRARIES
Select, acquire and organize library materials which should be based on approved library acquisition policy;
Cataloguing and classification of library materials.
Provision of reference and current awareness services;
Selective dissemination of information to the various departments in line with the vision and mission of the ministry;
Promotion of readers’ awareness;
Compilation of library statistics/users analysis;
Coordination of the profession in relationship with professional bodies and associations like the NLA, LRCN, AGOL, IFLA etc; and
Giving regular professional advice on library matters to management.
C.DIVISIONS IN THE FME LIBRARY UNIT AND THEIR FUNCTIONS.
The library unit has two divisions which are:
The Planning and Training Division, and

Planning and Development of libraries in the Unity Schools
Planning and Development of libraries in the Ministry’s Headquarters
Capacity building for all library staff for effective library management
Formulation of school library policies
Preparation of budgets for school library development
Organize workshops, seminars, meeting on issues related to library matters
Develop and maintain specialized libraries, for example, Legal Department
Preparation of budgets for Ministry’s Headquarters’ Library
FUNCTIONS OF MONITORING AND QUALITY ASSURANCE DIVISION
Formulate relevant policies suitable for use in all the sectors of education, i.e. Tertiary, Basic, Higher Education, etc.
Design, coordinate and implement programmes of interaction and cooperation among professional bodies and associations.
Cooperation and participation in UNESCO activities most especially on the allocation of UNESCO coupons to pay for foreign books, copyright dues and subscriptions in the desire to equip school libraries and Ministry Headquarters’ libraries with up to date relevant publications.
Oversee the activities of National Library of Nigeria (NLN)
Monitoring library projects implementation to ensure that all works and services provided meet required standard.
Undertake regular inspection of libraries in all the Federal Unity Colleges
Collaborate in dissemination of information on Ministry’s services through the production of periodic publications such as library journals and newsletters.
Evaluating performance and contributions of libraries at the Ministry’s Headquarters and all the Federal Unity Colleges Libraries in quality assurance policy of the Ministry.
